iPhone AFP Share

Erica Sadun posted about this over on tuaw.com. Thought I’d try it out for myself. Seems to work quite nicely, minus a couple minor things.

1. Copies over to the iPhone quite easily
2. Using the command provided (/opt/iphone/afp/startserver.sh. &) the AFP server starts on the iPhone and stays running for some undetermined amount of time (one of the items that seems buggy to me)
3. Via the Mac, accessing afp://<ip address> brings up the usual apple share dialog (see screenshots on tuaw).
4. Once authenticated, you are in and ready to go…

iPhone AFP Share

The author talks about enabling Bonjour, which I haven’t done, yet.

The other item that I noticed was that after a couple hours, I wasn’t able to reconnect back to the iPhone via AFP. Multiple attempts crashed Finder in Leopard. Attempting to start the AFP server again on the iPhone produced a message indicating the service was already running or in use.

Only after rebooting the iPhone and restarting the service, was I able to get back in via AFP.

I’m sure we’ll see a ton more development on this in the near future. A GUI to manage the starting and stopping of the service would be a crucial next step.

iApp-a-Day Awesomeness

Can’t say enough great things about http://www.iappaday.com. Today’s (11/4/007) app is called Burp, which allows users to take photos with their iPhones and upload them to the site for the world to see.

It has been addicting to keep refreshing to see what is coming up next. There are indeed some sick bastards out there, but overall it is very entertaining to see what people are eating or taking pictures of.

Good stuff.

iPhone Stacks – Mobile Stacks

I saw a video on Youtube about iPhone stacks and did a quick Google search to see where I could get them for myself.

Turns out it is a Google Code project called Mobile Stacks. It is not released to production yet, but the little bit I’ve been playing with it, it seems pretty good.

Some quarks include static set of icons in the stack, not easy to modify or change. The stacks show up on top of the other applications you open, until that application is fully open, then it goes behind. It covers the fourth icon on the iPhone dock, so I had to use SMBprefs to rearrange the icons so the iPod icon wasn’t covered up. I moved the Mail icon in that place because Mail is one of the Stacked icons.

You can tell the stacks to display curved or not. The screenshot below is curved, obviously. Hopefully it will be much better once released, but its fun to mess around with…

iPhone Applications

I read a post over on tuaw.com about an application that will call home by the touch of an icon.

I used http://www.jonsthoughtsoneverything.com/iphone_apper/ to create an application to call Jen.

I’m working on a custom icon with a 80×80 pixel image of Jen on it, but for now this will do (see bottom right of springboard).
